Who Are You Trying To Change?
And... who are you willing to leave out?
I've chosen to continue sharing my answers for The Marketing Seminar with Seth Godin. It's been an eye-opening experience. I love how hard he gets you to dig.
I’m trying to change millennials, specifically, those who believe that life is about purpose and meaning. We have less appetite to own things, feeling its fleeting moments of joy. Instead, placing an importance on experiences and our relationships with friends and family. We trust these people more than anyone.
We look up to visionaries - Elon Musk, Richard Branson, Tim Ferriss, Reid Hoffman, Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs, etc., as people who put their values to work. Who inspires us to dream big and do what’s right, not right in the moment. When our values are not acknowledged, it feels like direct opposition to our WHO. Initiating a distaste for work, as ineffective leadership fails to inspire.
We’re afraid of “hard work” if it implies long hours, limited vacation and absence of meaning, it’s a clear disconnect. Trading time as a commodity seems absurd. We prefer to work smarter, not harder. Do I need to be in the office or can I just as easily get it done from home (in half the time)? We yearn for freedom of choice.
I’m willing to leave out those who are motivated by money. I’m willing to leave out those who feel millennials are lazy, unmotivated and entitled. I’m willing to leave behind those who believe “this is how we’ve always done it.” I’m willing to leave out anyone who doesn’t feel that empowering others is the damn best way to see the change this world needs. We’re hungry for change.
